President Donald Trump's condolence call to the wife of slain soldier Sgt. La David Johnson "shocked" Gold Star father Khizr Khan, who first made headlines after criticizing Trump while speaking at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. Johnson, told ABC's "Good Morning America" that Trump "upset and hurt" her, making her cry, saying she was most hurt by the fact that the president "couldn't remember my husband's name."
Trump denied her version of the call in a tweet Monday morning.
On "CBS This Morning" Monday, the father of late Army Captain Humayun Khan, said he was "shocked" and "disheartened" by what he heard about the call.
"I wish somebody would advise him on dignity, most dignity for these families," Khan said. "Privacy, dignity, restraint. He was not advised of those sentiments, of those words."
Khan, who recently wrote a memoir about his family, was also asked if he thought Trump's advisers may have asked him to write a letter to Johnson instead of making a phone call.
"His advisers know his habits and his nature. They must have insisted. Put those words on a piece of paper and place it in front of him to read it from there so there is no misunderstanding — that was not done. "
When asked if the president should write or call in these circumstances, Khan said, "that is a very personal decision that ought to be left to the leader of this country what he decides."
He added, "that is his prerogative. But utmost respect, dignity, and privacy [must] be granted to these most respectful families, the bravest families of this nation."
