House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Monday he's inclined to take the advice of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and tie an $8 billion Hurricane Harvey relief package to a raise in the debt ceiling.
"We have to deal with the debt ceiling. We all know it," McCarthy said on Fox News Channel's "Special Report."
Mnuchin said on "Fox News Sunday" that he and President Donald Trump believe relief funding for storm victims should also raise the nation's debt limit.
"The treasury secretary is telling us that because of Harvey, because we are putting this extra money out there to help those in need, you're hitting the debt ceiling faster," McCarthy said. "That's one of the rules of the treasury secretary. I'm going to listen to him because the last thing I'd want to have happen here is that we pass a supplemental relief for FEMA but because of the debt ceiling, we can't help those in need."
McCarthy announced earlier Monday that the House will vote on a storm relief package on Wednesday.
The plan is for the House to pass the relief package along, then have the Senate add the raising of the debt ceiling before sending the bill back to the House, Axios reported.
