House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy Tuesday denied President-elect Donald Trump is pulling back on his election promises, including building a wall at the nation's border with Mexico and curbing funding to the nation's sanctuary cities.
In fact, House Republicans are ready to bring laws to effect change.
"[We are] working on legislation now so that when we're sworn in, not waiting until the president is sworn in, but at the very first week of January, how we are able to move the legislation needed to start building the wall," the California Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
He also pushed back on leaders such as Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who pledged Monday that his city would remain a sanctuary city, as its "value and commitment to inclusion" will not change with a new administration.
"The murderers and others here illegally, they need to leave this country," McCarthy said Tuesday. "I think Rahm Emanuel needs to focus on security of Chicago, and the number of murders that are taking place there. This is not new legislation that we have to move. This is just an acting current law in the process."
There may be a difference in opinions throughout Congress, he continued, but "the one thing everybody has always agreed upon, you have to secure the border."
McCarthy said there are many in Congress who are excited about Trump's election, as most of them were Republicans elected in 2010 as a part of the "revolution to drain the swamp" then.
"I see people so excited to finally be able to achieve what they have dreamt and why they ran for office in the first place," McCarthy said. "We're going to change this country and we're going to repeal and replace Obamacare. We tried to repeal it for more than 50 times. Now we're going to achieve it. We're going to get this economy moving in, we're going to reform, bring back and reign in those regulations that we've been fighting every step of the way with a President Barack Obama. This is a new day."
