President Donald Trump and Democrat nominee Joe Biden should be encouraged to talk about foreign relations during Thursday's presidential debate, as Americans should know how they plan to protect the nation, according to Sen. John Kennedy.
"Most Americans don't want to die and there are dozens of countries. I can think of four, especially, who want to try to kill us," the Louisiana Republican said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "Given the first role of government is to protect people and property, I would kind of like to know what the two candidates of the United States are going to do to protect us."
Kennedy added that he thinks the debates commission should give candidates greater discretion in picking both the moderator and the topics that will be discussed.
"The moderator, who is picked by the commission, has unfettered discretion," said Kennedy. "I think both sides ought to have input."
Kennedy continued that he prefers an "old school moderator," and that he liked Fox News' Chris Wallace, the moderator for the first debate.
"Chris, I say this gently, but he is an equal opportunity jerk," said Kennedy. "He wears both sides out and that's what a good journalist is supposed to do. He is not supposed to pick sides ... you want a moderator who is not picking sides, who is going to really bear down. I mean, only picking the person who is going to run the most powerful country in all of human history you want to see them under pressure and [have a] moderator who puts that kind of pressure on both of them. Both in terms of tone and topic. You also don't want a moderator who wants to be the star of the show."
