The relationship between President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau likely will "be the same" as it had been, even though Trump called Trudeau "two-faced" after a film clip surfaced showing the Canadian leader and others making fun of him at a NATO event earlier this week, presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway said Thursday.
"I thought it was a very childish, churlish exchange, but they were hardly denouncing the president's policies," Conway told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "They were hardly denouncing him."
In the clip, Trudeau, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Princess Anne are shown in a huddle talking about Trump and laughing about his earlier press conference.
Conway on Thursday said the comments came because of the fact that Trump "commands the room" and that "maybe that makes people jealous," but people on social media tend to look at clips without paying attention to the context rather than what was really going on.
But she does think their relationship will be the same, because "at least President Trump is honest when he's calling out a foreign leader and the way he feels about them not paying their defense dues to NATO which has been a problem with Canada and other allies."
Conway said she also thought the video was "embarrassing to the people in the circle, all of whom I've met," and that they all have "excellent relationships" with Trump and the United States.
"I thought President Trump said it best," said Conway. "I think he's two-faced in that, here is somebody who is kind to me and kind to my face, working together, having bilateral meetings and then when he thinks he can get a couple of high-fives, I will say it again childish and churlish."
