Sen. Bernie Sanders' narrow win in New Hampshire Tuesday shows there's a "flavor of the hour" in the Democratic Party and reflects the discontent with the field of Democrats, Kayleigh McEnany, the national press secretary for President Donald Trump's 2020 campaign, commented Wednesday morning.
"I think it's a fair comparison to compare Bernie Sanders last night and President Trump in 2016 in the primaries," McEnany told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
"President Trump, in a blue state, got 30,000 more votes in the New Hampshire primary than Bernie got last night. That is astronomical. I think it's a fair comparison."
With Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., finishing behind Sanders, that shows the changing dynamic, said McEnany.
"We heard 'Pocahontas' [Trump's nickname for Sen. Elizabeth Warren] was on top, then Mayor Pete, then Bernie on top," said McEnany. "There's such discontent with the Democrat field. Compare that to 2016 with President Trump. He was always on top of the national polls, he was also always the foregone victor and the leader of our party with 95% approval."
She added that former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg had a "lackluster performance" despite his billions of dollars.
"He has a lot of billions, but he doesn't have a lot of voters," she said. "Mike Bloomberg can try to buy an election, there's no appetite for that. He's a pipe dream ... this is a party where 65% of Democratic voters believe in socialism. They're voting for Bernie Sanders, a guy who literally says the Soviet Union does things better than the United States. That is the Democratic Party today."
She also rejected the thought that Buttigieg should be considered a moderate because he "wants Medicare buy-in, which would crowd out employer-provided insurance, he wants the Green New Deal, he wants to get rid of tax cuts."
