The battle over confirmation of President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee is likely to center on health care coverage, Politico reported.
President Donald Trump has signaled to his supporters that he wants to see Roe v. Wade, the abortion law, overturned, while Democrats aim to use Kavanaugh’s selection to present their midterm election message of preserving the Affordable Care Act, the report said.
"If you had any doubt about where Judge Kavanaugh stands on safe, legal abortion, just take a look at how anti-abortion activists are celebrating his nomination," said Erica Sackin of Planned Parenthood, Politico reported.
Anti-abortion groups have rallied around Kavanaugh, although Kavanaugh in 2006, during his confirmation hearing for the D.C. appellate court, said, "I’d follow Roe v. Wade faithfully and fully," Politico reported.
A crucial vote in Kavanaugh’s nomination could be Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who supports abortion access and resisted her party’s attempts to repeal Obamacare, the report said.
