House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has endorsed California Assemblywoman Christy Smith in the race to replace former Democratic Rep. Katie Hill, Roll Call is reporting.
"I am proud to endorse Christy Smith because she will work to fight corruption, lower the cost of prescription drugs, fully fund public schools, and build a strong middle-class economy that works for all Americans," Pelosi said.
Smith has been endorsed by 13 other House members from California, along with the state's senators, Democrats Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris.
The March 3 special election includes Democratic candidate Cenk Uygur, former Republican Rep. Steve Knight, and several others.
The candidate who gets more than 50% of the vote will serve out Hill's term, which runs through January 2021. If a candidate fails to get more than 50%, the top two would compete in a May 12 election.
Hill resigned after admitting to her relationship with a member of her campaign staff, but she denied allegations that she had a relationship with a member of her legislative staff.
