President Donald Trump's tax reform plan does not include new revenue to make up for the large tax cuts, Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Friday.

Kasich, a Republican who ran against Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, made the comments Friday during a panel in Washington hosted by The Christian Science Monitor, according to The Hill.

"When a Democrat is president, Republicans care about debt and Democrats don't. When a Republican is president, Democrats care about debt and Republicans don't. That's how pathetic things get in this town," Kasich said.

Relying too much on the idea that tax cuts lead to incentives that lead to boosts in the economy can be damaging, the governor said, pointing out Kansas, where Gov. Sam Brownback has "enormous revenue problems."

Deficits take money away from programs that help poor people, Kasich said, in a call for the Republican Party to exercise moderation between cutting taxes and raising the deficit.

"They need to be careful about adding an enormous amount of increase to the national debt. Because when the debt goes up, the jobs go down and when the debt goes down, the jobs go up."

At another point in his Christian Science Monitor speech, Kasich said he was not ruling out another run at the presidency, according to Roll Call.

Kasich also discussed the tax reform plan Thursday at Harvard University.

"I don't think there's any way they can say, 'OK, we're going to cut all these taxes and it's going to pay for itself,'" he said.
