Withdrawing from NAFTA would destroy American farmers and hand "Democrats the midterm elections on a silver platter," Karl Rove wrote in column for The Wall Street Journal.

"In 1980 President Carter demolished farm counties with his embargo on grain sales to the Soviet Union," Rove writes. "This was bad politics and bad policy, but at least he was trying to punish an adversary. If Mr. Trump kills NAFTA, he’d be damaging red states to undermine allies."

Some of those red states with significant farm economies and the potential consequences of killing NAFTA, according to Rove:

  • North Dakota: High tariffs that would significantly dent to its $3.5 billion export business of crops to Mexico and Canada; Republicans hope to flip Democrat Heidi Heitkamp's Senate seat.
  • Missouri: 75 percent tariffs on its corn and soybean production; Republicans hope to flip Democrat Claire McCaskill's Senate seat.
  • Kansas: 25 percent tariffs on its beef exports; Republicans hope to get another Republican elected to replace termed-out GOP Gov. Sam Brownback.

Then there's the auto industry.

If President Donald Trump withdraws from NAFTA, the ripple effect within the auto industry will be felt in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee, all states where at least 9 percent of the workforce is tied to cars, Rove writes.

"Any trade agreement that is two decades old needs updating. NAFTA is no exception, especially given the growth of e-commerce and the digital economy," Rove writes.

"But bad policy is bad politics. Killing NAFTA would damage Republicans in agricultural, auto and border states and help elect more Democrats in 2018, strengthening the party’s impeachment efforts.

"Mr. President, it isn’t worth it," Rove concludes.
