Doom and gloom won't win elections, Republican operative Karl Rove says, so he'll be surprised to see Donald Trump take the GOP nomination.
In an appearance Tuesday on Fox News Channel's
"The O'Reilly Factor," Rove was asked by host Bill O'Reilly whether he saw things like Trump, who says the country is in trouble, or like former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who is saying America is on the cusp of something great.
"I'm a Reagan man," Rove said, noting that the GOP icon campaigned against double-digit inflation and double-digit interest rates coming off the Jimmy Carter presidency.
Still, Rove said, Reagan said he believed America was a "shining city on a hill."
"Look, you cannot win saying everything is going to hell in a handbasket," Rove said.
"Trump is," O'Reilly shot back.
"Let's see if he wins with that," Rove responded.
