Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach credited President Donald Trump's endorsement for having a "huge impact" in his narrow primary victory against Gov. Jeff Colyer a week ago.
"There is no question, certainly on Election Day voting, we did very well and that's part of the reason why," Kobach told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" on Wednesday.
A week after the vote, Colyer conceded to Kobach on Tuesday and called for party unity in the November race, where Kobach will face Democrat Laura Kelly for the governor's seat.
The day before the election, Trump tweeted his support for Kobach, who at one time headed his voter fraud investigation.
"That's part of the reason why, when the provisional ballots were counted, they went in our favor, and I think the president's endorsement affected people's decision on Election Day," Kobach said.
Kobach, who is known for his strong stance against illegal immigration, added he believes most voters in his state, not only Republicans, see the matter as a major issue.
"Kansas is a destination state for illegal immigration," he said. "We see a lot of people working in meat packing plants, working in construction in some of our larger cities, and we're also a transition state . . . we're definitely affected heavily by it . . . the other big message is taxes. We're the highest tax state in this part of the Midwest."
