Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback will resign on Jan. 31 to join the Trump administration as U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom.
Brownback, a Republican, posted his resignation letter on Twitter. In the letter he noted: "Wherever my new duties may take me, my Kansas values and experience will always travel with me."
The Senate needed a tiebreaking vote by Vice President Mike Pence to confirm Brownback, The Washington Post noted. His mission as religious freedom ambassador is to confront the persecution of believers of many faiths in countries throughout the world, the newspaper said.
Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer will take over for Brownback as governor, The Wichita Eagle reported.
