Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., will go by “Pioneer” as her code name for the Secret Service, according to CNN.
Harris reportedly began receiving protection from the Secret Service after Joe Biden chose her as his running mate. She picked the name from a list that had already been approved by the Secret Service.
The code name correlates to Harris's historical importance as the first Black woman running on a major party's presidential ticket.
Former Secret Service special agent Jonathan Wackrow said past protectees of the Secret Service had taken on the characteristics of the code names they'd chosen.
For example, former President Barack Obama’s Secret Service code name, which is reportedly "Renegade," was a "great example" of “how he went against the establishment in some of the things that he had done,” Wackrow said.
Late first lady Barbara Bush’s Secret Service code name was reportedly “Tranquility," which “embodied the tranquility and peacefulness in a time of war,” he said.
According to CNN, other Secret Service code names are “Celtic” for Biden, “Renaissance" for former first lady Michelle Obama, “Mogul” for President Donald Trump and “Muse” for first lady Melania Trump.
