President Donald Trump on Wednesday tweeted a doctored photograph of himself giving a medal to an "American hero" dog wounded in the Syria raid that led to the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State's leader.

Al-Baghdadi reportedly spent his last moments running from the dog, a Belgian Malinois, before committing suicide. When he detonated his suicide vest, the ISIS leader killed two of his children and injured the K-9.

"AMERICAN HERO!" read the tweet accompanying the photo.

The photo appeared to be an altered version of an Associated Press photograph of Trump awarding a Medal of Honor to James C. McCloughan.

The image bears a watermark from the conservative news site The Daily Wire.

"We have declassified a picture of the wonderful dog (name not declassified) that did such a GREAT JOB in capturing and killing the Leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi," Trump tweeted Monday.
