A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit that alleged the Trump campaign, along with former adviser Roger Stone, worked with Russia and WikiLeaks to publish hacked Democratic National Committee emails during the 2016 presidential campaign, Politico reported.
U.S. District Court Judge Ellen Huvelle said in a Tuesday evening ruling that the case was not strong enough to proceed, according to Politico.
"The Trump Campaign's efforts to elect President Trump in D.C. are not suit-related contacts for those efforts did not involve acts taken in furtherance of the conspiracies to disseminate emails that harmed plaintiffs," Huvelle wrote in her decision, Politico reported.
"Campaign meetings, canvassing voters, and other regular business activities of a political campaign do not constitute activities related to the conspiracies alleged in the complaint," Huvelle said in the decision.
The judge pointed out that her decision was based on legal jurisdiction, not on the allegations that the Trump campaign worked with Russians to publish hacked emails.
"It bears emphasizing that this Court's ruling is not based on a finding that there was no collusion between defendants and Russia during the 2016 presidential election… this is the wrong forum for plaintiffs' lawsuit. The Court takes no position on the merits of plaintiffs' claims," Huvelle wrote, Politico reported.
Former DNC staffer Scott Comer and two DNC donors, Roy Cockrum and Eric Schoenberg, filed the suit in 2017, alleging that the hacking invaded their privacy and that the Trump campaign and Roger Stone played a part in it, the report said.
Protect Democracy, a Trump resistance group, said it might refile the case elsewhere.
"It is clear that the Court recognizes that there is sufficient evidence to suggest a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, but believes this case belongs in a different court," the group said in a statement, Politico reported.
The DNC was not involved in the case, but brought its own lawsuit in April, accusing top Trump campaign officials, Russian government officials and their military intelligence service, of coordinating efforts to damage Trump opponent Hillary Clinton.
