George Washington University Law professor Jonathan Turley says Democrats acted like impulsive holiday shoppers during Wednesday's impeachment vote against President Donald Trump.
The House voted almost entirely along party lines to charge Trump with obstruction of justice and abuse of power. Just two Democrats voted against both articles.
Turley, who has been highly critical of the impeachment process, testified on Capitol Hill during the House's proceedings. On Thursday in an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times he slammed the process, calling the evidence incomplete and conflicted.
"I suppose the rush should have been expected," wrote Turley. "Politicians just love to check off their to-do lists at year's end.
"In racing to meet its artificial deadline of impeaching by Christmas, the House submitted a case guaranteed to fail," Turley concluded. "Rather than wait a couple months to move forward with a greatly enhanced case, the House prefers to grab what it's got on the shelf and run with it."
The vote now shifts the impeachment proceedings to the Senate, where a trial is expected in January.
