President Donald Trump's recent statements about the Justice Department show that he wants to use it to take on his political enemies, according to Axios' Jonathan Swan Friday on MSNBC, according to Mediate.

"He wants the FBI and the Justice Department to turn into a political operation, going after his political enemies... we need to say this is unprecedented and wildly inappropriate," he said during the discussion hosted by Stephanie Ruhle.

No other president in the modern era has been so open about wanting the Justice Department to be "weaponized on his behalf," Swan said.

"Perhaps other presidents have yearned privately for it, but have we ever seen anything like this?"

"Yes, we have, it's called Watergate back in 1972 and 1973," commented Robert Traynham of Bipartisan Policy Center.

However, Swan noted that Nixon was not as "nakedly public" about his wishes for the Justice Department.

On Friday, Trump called on the Justice Department to investigate "Crooked Hillary and the Dems."
