Democratic candidate for Georgia's 6th Congressional District Jon Ossoff is stepping up his campaign's "field-first" approach to the runoff election between him and Republican candidate Karen Handel, according to Roll Call.
Ossoff, a documentary film producer, raised just over $8 million before the primary and spent almost $2 million on field operations. Ahead of the election in June, his campaign plans to further expand its field work, aiming to increase voter turnout and win over independents and disappointed Republicans.
Handel, former Georgia secretary of state, raised less than $500,000 before the primary and spent just under $300,000.
"With $2 million dedicated to voter-to-voter contact, early registration and voter turnout, it'd be hard for us to find a congressional race that has ever come close to that kind of operation," Sacha Haworth, an Ossoff spokesperson and senior adviser, told Roll Call.
Ossoff amassed almost 10,000 volunteers and 100 field staff before the end of the primary. His campaign credits their frequent house parties, sometimes three a day, for the grass-roots support.
Last week, Handel vowed that the vacant seat will "stay in the hands of a Republican," according to Fortune. "It is all Republicans, all hands on deck," she added.
