Jon Huntsman, the former governor of Utah, is in talks to become the U.S. ambassador to Russia, a senior administration official told CNN.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Huntsman are in discussions about the job, the source said.
Another source said Huntsman, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, had been talking with President Donald Trump and his advisers.
Huntsman has served two previous ambassadorships, one to Singapore and another to China, during Barack Obama's tenure as president.
The former governor endorsed Trump for president during the 2016 presidential election, but later called on him to exit the race when a 2005 tape was released containing Trump making lewd comments about women, The Hill reported.
