Republican Rep. John Mica is projected to lose his seat to his Democratic challenger after serving 12 terms in the chamber dating back to 1993.

According to The Hill, Mica lost his seat representing Florida's seventh district to Democrat Stephanie Murphy.

The lines were redrawn for the Orlando-area district for Tuesday's election, a move that diversified the voting bloc. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Murphy had received a little more than 51 percent of the vote with most votes counted.

Murphy switched her party affiliation to Democrat this year before she filed her campaign papers, the Sentinel reports.

Mica chaired the House Transportation Committee from 2011 to 2013. Prior to working in Washington, he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 1976-1980.

The race received national attention, with President Barack Obama among those who got involved and supported Murphy's candidacy.

Republicans have a strong majority in the House and were not expected to lose that Tuesday night, although House Democrats came into Election Day with confidence

Murphy's victory certainly deals a blow to House Republicans regardless of how the balance of power ends up being.
