Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Thursday is joining two Democrats to support the Honest Ads Act, a bill that would ramp up disclosure rules for online political ads, according to Axios.

Democrat Sens. Mark Warner, D-Va., and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., are joining McCain on the bill, the first proposal that addresses Russian agents using technology platforms to meddle in the 2016 election.

Axios posted a preview of some provisions in the Honest Ads Act:

Amending the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act to include paid internet and digital ads — only broadcast TV, radio, cable, and satellite communications are included in the current act.

Requiring digital platforms to keep public records of electioneering communications above certain levels. The records would include the rates charged and the purchaser's contract information.

Requiring platforms to make reasonable efforts to keep foreign individuals and entities from using political ads to influence American voters.

Tech giants are not likely to resist the legislative proposals, and would work with Congress to push the proposals forward without a negative effect on their earnings, according to Axios.

McCain was the first Republican senator to sign on to the Honest Ads Act, saying Wednesday that he supported it "for the same reason I have been for transparency in campaign finance reform for the last 25 years," according to Politico.
