The late Sen. John McCain treasured the travels of the “three amigos” around the world as places “billionaires can’t go,” former Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said Sunday.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Lieberman shared recollections of his political relationship with McCain and GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina — dubbed the “three amigos” during their time together in the upper chamber.
"Last summer after the surgery, I saw him out in Arizona… He says to me, ‘Joey, you and Lindsey and I traveled to places billionaires can't go to by the nature of our relationship,’” Lieberman recalled. “I say ‘you're right. Some of them nobody, including billionaires, would want to go to."
Lieberman, who referred to himself as Meghan McCain’s “proud uncle,” praised her remarks at her father’s memorial at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
"To say the obvious, Meghan is a daughter who had a very special close relationship with her father, John McCain,” he said. “So he's gone. He's died. She's grieving and yet by the nature of his life, she's called on to make a very public global statement appearance… But she did it. She did it magnificently."
He added that his own heart will be “heavy” at McCain’s burial Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
“To have the friendship of John McCain and Lindsey Graham, as I was blessed to have had, and … say goodbye, my heart will be heavy,” he said. “I'll shed a tear. And yet, I'll thank God that I knew a man like John McCain.”
