Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., weighed in on the controversy surrounding disparaging comments allegedly made by President Donald Trump about certain countries, saying Friday it's unpatriotic to make such statements.
"Respect for the God-given dignity of every human being, no matter their race, ethnicity or other circumstances of their birth, is the essence of American patriotism," McCain said. "To believe otherwise is to oppose the very idea of America.
"People have come to this country from everywhere, and people from everywhere have made America great. Our immigration policy should reflect that truth, and our elected officials, including our president, should respect it."
It's being reported that Trump used the term "s**thole countries" to describe Haiti and certain nations in Africa during a bipartisan immigration meeting Thursday at the White House. Trump said the reports are false, but several people in the room — Democrats and Republicans — confirmed that he used the term.
