Sen. John McCain took a fresh jab at President Donald Trump on Friday, ripping the commander in chief for calling on Russia to be invited back to the G-7 talks in Canada this weekend.

The Arizona Republican said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been guilty of "assaulting democratic institutions all over the world" since the invasion of Crimea.

"The president has inexplicably shown our adversaries the deference and esteem that should be reserved for our closest allies," McCain said in a written statement, The Hill reports.

"Those nations that share our values and have sacrificed alongside us for decades are being treated with contempt. This is the antithesis of so-called 'principled realism' and a sure path to diminishing America's leadership in the world."

Russia was suspended from the G-7 in 2014 after it violated international law and annexed Crimea. But Trump said Friday that Russia should be included in the latest round of talks.

"I would recommend — and it's up to them, but Russia should be in the meeting, it should be a part of it. Whether you like it or not, and it may not be politically correct, but we have a world to run," Trump said.

McCain's blast at Trump is the latest salvo in his ongoing criticisms of the president. The senator, who has been fighting brain cancer, has already said that Trump is not invited to his funeral.
