The State Department has warned that any meetings between former Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian officials would be inappropriate, the Washington Examiner is reporting.

Kerry has come under fire for meeting with Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif earlier this year to discuss the nuclear accord between Iran and the U.S. and other world powers.

He has confirmed meeting with Zarif “three or four times” since leaving office.

But Manish Singh, assistant secretary of state, told the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday: “I don't have personal knowledge of those meetings, but, if that is happening, again, I would find it very inappropriate.”

President Donald Trump commented later on Twitter:

"John Kerry had illegal meetings with the very hostile Iranian Regime, which can only serve to undercut our great work to the detriment of the American people. He told them to wait out the Trump Administration! Was he registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act? BAD!"
