President Donald Trump might escape a fate that doomed Richard Nixon simply because Trump is ignorant to the kind of powers he has, former White House counsel John Dean told Politico.

Dean, who became a witness for the prosecution in the Watergate scandal that took down Nixon, says Trump can't be prosecuted for abuse of powers if he's not even aware of those powers, Dean told Politico.

Not only was Nixon aware of the powers of the president, he wielded them.

"Trump isn't likely to be found guilty of the same abuses of power that Nixon was because he doesn't know he has the power to pick up the phone and tell the secretary of the Treasury to start auditing Bob Mueller's tax returns. He hasn't thought that through yet. Nixon had," Dean told Politico's "Off Message" podcast.

"Trump doesn't even know where the levers and buttons are that he can push and pull," Dean told Politico.

However, Dean scoffed at the "wishful thinking" of Trump's myriad legal team that Mueller's investigation into Russia collusion and obstruction of justice is anywhere close to the finish line.

There is a parallel between Dean and former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn and a danger that the lessons of Watergate are bypassing Trump's legal circle.

"They didn't know how much I knew. I knew much more than they thought I did," Dean told Politico. "With Flynn and his proximity, he had even more proximity than I did."

Further, the promise of a Trump pardon for Flynn carries no weight with Mueller.

"That doesn't end (Flynn's) testimonial responsibilities," Dean told Politico. "In fact, to the contrary, he can be indicted again for perjury."
