Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said that Republicans should learn a lesson from incumbent Alabama Sen. Luther Strange's Tuesday loss to conservative challenger Roy Moore.

"We've had what I would say (are) similar, but not the same challenges before — for example, with the advent of the tea party following 2010 and primaries. And I just think we need to learn from this experience and be prepared," Cornyn said Wednesday, according to The Hill.

Strange's loss was a defeat for the Republican establishment, as Strange was supported by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and his allies, The Hill reported.

Moore, a former federal judge who had been twice removed for ethics violations, got support from former White House strategist Steve Bannon.

Republicans are "listening and watching very closely," Cornyn said.

"It's not news that we have sort of an outsider vs. insider challenge," he said, adding that more experienced senators will be more ready for the next election because voters in their areas know the experienced legislators better.

Republicans in the Senate will have to defend eight seats in the 2018 midterms, while Democratic senators will have 25 seats on the line, but more conservative challengers could line up to take on the Republican incumbents, the Hill reported.

Cornyn said despite the loss of Strange, McConnell remains a viable leader in the Republican caucus. "I'd hate to think where we would be without Sen. McConnell's efforts," he said.

Also Wednesday, Cornyn said President Donald Trump's call to simplify the U.S. tax codes would not provide a tax break for the rich. "That is predictable that our opponents will say that, but it's not true."
