Former CIA Director John Brennan said Thursday he has no idea who the senior administration official behind an anonymous New York Times column detailing concerns about President Donald Trump's White House, but he is concerned about how the "wounded" president will react to it.
"People have criticized me for speaking out as a former director, but I see the signs of a looming disaster," Brennan, now an NBC analyst, told "Today."
"I don't know how Donald Trump is going to react to this. A wounded lion is a very dangerous animal, and I think Donald Trump is wounded."
Brennan added that the piece, which detailed efforts by staffers to curb the president's impulsive actions was "wholly consistent" with other reports that have come out over the past year, including within a new book by journalist Bob Woodward.
He also called the article an active of "insubordination," but that it's born out of loyalty to the United States.
"This is not sustainable to have an executive branch where individuals are not following the orders of the chief executive," said Brennan.
He added that he thinks the column "certainly is courageous," but he is concerned about its implications.
"We've seen the memorial service for McCain and eloquent statements about the American values not being followed by Donald Trump," said Brennan.
"Secondly, the Bob Woodward book and now this. I think you see just a continuous increase in the concern, the extraordinary measures people are taking. I do think things will get worse before they get better"
