Brennan: Trump Worse Than Russia on Election 'Disinformation'

(CNN's "Newsroom")

President Donald Trump is exceeding even Russia with his spread of "disinformation" about election fraud in connection with the November results, former CIA Director John Brennan said Monday.

"I used to think that the Russians were the world's most sophisticated and expert sources of disinformation, but unfortunately I think Donald Trump and a lot of people of his ilk, his supporters, have now demonstrated that they're able to consume the airwaves with these claims and allegations that are totally baseless," Brennan told CNN's Jim Sciutto.

"I think that Donald Trump certainly has exceeded the ability of the Russians to influence the minds, the ideas, and even the votes of the American people as he continues upon this very unfortunate disinformation campaign," he added.

Brennan added he is concerned Trump's protestations will spark violence in America's streets, and said he hopes cooler heads will prevail.

"I think he's doing damage both on the domestic front as well as the international front," Brennan said. "He's sowing seeds of doubt of what happened in this election as well as future elections. On the international stage, I think he's disparaging our ability to carry out these free and fair elections. The United States, the world's oldest democracy, should set the example for the transitions of power from one person or party to another."

Brennan also Monday criticized the assassination of Iran's top nuclear scientist, calling it a "reckless move" that could lead to Iran seeking retaliation at a time of transition between administrations.

Nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed last week, along with his bodyguards, about 40 miles east of Tehran. U.S. and Israeli officials have referred to him as the "driving force" behind Iran's nuclear weapons program.

The former CIA official stopped short, however, of directly blaming Trump or the United States for the assassination for political or other reasons, but said such actions should be condemned.

"The attacks and strikes against terrorist leaders and operatives are consistent with international law in terms of taking actions against illegitimate combatants," Brennan said. "The strike against Mohsen Fakhizadeh was a strike against a senior Iranian official, an official of a sovereign nation."
