John Bolton said Friday that it was "an honor" to be named national security adviser by President Donald Trump.
"I humbly accept his offer," Bolton said on Twitter:
President Trump tweeted Thursday that Bolton, 69, who served as United Nations ambassador under President George W. Bush, would succeed H.R, McMaster on April 9.
McMaster, 55, a three-star Army lieutenant general, said he would retire from the military and "leave public service" this summer.
"The United States currently faces a wide array of issues," Bolton said, "and I look forward to working with President Trump and his leadership team in addressing these complex challenges in an effort to make our country safer at home and stronger abroad."
