The House Democrats latest attempt to impeach President Donald Trump is "ill-advised" given Joe Biden's upcoming effort to unify the country, according to Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.
"I don't see that and I think the House should know that also," Manchin told Fox News' "Special Report." "We've been trying to send that message over. They know the votes aren't there. You would think they would do that.
"I think this is so ill-advised for Joe Biden to be coming in, trying to heal the country, trying to be the president of all the people, when we're going to be so divided and fighting again."
Manchin added to host Bret Baier, "there's no rush to do this impeachment now; we can do it later, if they think it's necessary.
"Let the judicial system do its job, Brett," he said. "Let the investigations go on, let the evidence come forth, and then we'll go forward from there.
"He'll be out of office, no matter what happens," he added.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is unlikely to take up impeachment now, regardless, and he will remain in control of the Senate until Sens.-elect Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., and Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., have their elections certified and are sworn into office later.
"They were acting within the confines" of the Constitution, Manchin said of senators who contested the Electoral College results. "I think it was very, very bad judgment. Those that held their ground, I could not believe it."
Manchin, though, vowed to not take punitive actions against Republicans' constitutional authority.
"Brett, they have to live with their conscience; they have to live with themselves," he concluded. "They have to look at their constituents."
"My job right now – being in the position I am, basically being in the middle – I am going to do everything in my power to bring this country together, to heal the country, and to work in a bipartisan fashion, which is the reason we have the Senate.
"I am going to do the job I've always done. I continue to try working with the minority and the majority. Now that we're split, we need to bring this country together, and I think people want us to."
