Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., will oppose the confirmation of David Zatezalo, President Donald Trump's pick to oversee the Mine Safety and Health Administration, The Hill reports.
Zatezalo had retired after serving as an executive of Rhino Resources. The firm had run-ins with MSHA over alleged safety violations while he was there, according to the Hill.
"While I appreciate Mr. Zatezalo's willingness to serve, I cannot support his confirmation to lead MSHA," Manchin said.
"After reviewing his qualifications and record of safety during his time in the coal industry, I am not convinced that Mr. Zatezalo is suited to oversee the federal agency that implements and enforces mine safety laws and standards."
Manchin also noted 12 coal miners have been killed nationwide in 2017 — four more than those who died on the job in 2016, the Charleston Gazette-Mail newspaper reported.
"I have comforted too many families who have lost loved ones serving our nation in the mines," Manchin said. "Strong leadership at the Mine Safety and Health Administration is non-negotiable."
