Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., brought in more than $1.4 million toward his re-election campaign in this year's second quarter, according to Politico.

Manchin's take was more than twice the $552,000 he brought in during the previous quarter and now his re-election fund has almost $3.5 million, Politico reports.

"West Virginians are tired of partisan negativity getting in the way of good government. I'm running on a record of consensus-building on behalf of the people of the Mountain State —hard-working West Virginians who deserve elected leaders who always put their interests ahead of politics," Manchin said in a statement, according to Politico.

Two Republicans are facing off in the primary for his seat, while Manchin faces Paula Swearengin in the Democratic primary.

His Republican opponents are Rep. Evan Jenkins and Patrick Morrissey, West Virginia's attorney general. Politico notes their primary fight could be bitter, which could help Democrats hold on to the seat.

The West Virginia Democrat on Wednesday announced a bipartisan legislation with Sen. Todd Young, an Indiana Republican, that called for more accountability in the Department of Education.

"I have always said that government agencies need to be more transparent and efficient and I'm proud to join my colleague Sen. Young in bipartisan legislation to do just that," Manchin said in a statement on his website.
