Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said Thursday that former FBI Director Robert Mueller is a "great choice" to lead the investigation into reports of Russian election interference.
"It sounds to be a great choice, and it is the right move and a great choice to put some confidence back," Manchin said on CNN's "New Day." "We're on the right track. And this is a good thing. I think the public should have confidence in what's going on."
He added that the Senate Intelligence Committee will maintain a separate investigation, but that "the special prosecutor will do his job and we'll see where it goes. But we're going to make sure that we uncover and have transparency and whatever's there is there. Let the intel take you to the facts and the facts will take you to the truth."
On Wednesday, Manchin criticized President Donald Trump for tweeting about the ongoing investigation into Russian involvement in the election, saying he'd like to "urge my president, our president: lay off the tweets for a while and let's get back to work," according to The Washington Times.
He added that although he's "not a legal authority," but that "the intelligence committee will get the facts. We'll get the facts and go from there."
