Sen. Manchin Hopeful Trump Will Support His Gun Control Bill

Sen. Joe Manchin told "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday he is hopeful that President Donald Trump will make efforts to support his gun control bill as a way to move forward with efforts to address the issue of firearm violence.

Following Trump's meeting with congressmen last week on the subject of school safety in the aftermath of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, host Brian Kilmeade asked the West Virginia Democrat what progress there has been since then.

"We're still trying to navigate this and get a signal from the White House as to the direction they want to go," Manchin said, adding that hopefully Trump will support the bill, which has been around for five years.

Manchin's bill, proposed together with Republican Sen. Pat Toomey in 2013 after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in which 26 people were killed, expands background checks to online and gun show sales, but it exempts sales between family and friends, according to The Washington Times.

"It's not gun control. It's simply gun sense," Manchin said, explaining that "It is the most reasonable, responsible way to move forward," especially since it does not infringe on any law-abiding gun owner's rights.

However, the bill has twice failed to gain enough support, both in 2013 and in 2015, despite polls that show more than 70 percent of gun owners back the bill, as well as close to 90 percent of the American people, according to the Times.

When Kilmeade said to Manchin that it appeared from the tone of Trump's meeting last week that the president is waiting for proposals from legislators, the senator said that 'Nothing will pass unless the president is comfortable with it," emphasizing that the bill needs the backing of Trump in order to get it through Congress.
