Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., became the second Democrat to back the nomination of Mike Pompeo for secretary of state, The Hill is reporting.
Manchin's announced support came in a tweet on Monday.
Pompeo was already likely to have enough votes for Senate confirmation, The Hill noted. Republican Rand Paul of Kentucky is expected to vote against him, but Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., became the first Democrat to come out in favor of Pompeo. Heitkamp's vote would likely give Pompeo the necessary 50th vote, according to The Hill.
However, several key Democrats remain undecided, as does GOP Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, according to the website.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is set to vote on the Pompeo nomination on Monday. But The Wall Street Journal noted it is poised to vote against him.
However, the nomination can still be brought to the full Senate for a vote.
