Despite leading in the major national polls by an average of more than 7 points, Joe Biden can still lose the November election to President Donald Trump, former White House press secretary Joe Lockhart argued in a new piece.
Writing for CNN, Lockhart first presented the reasons why Biden can win, most of which involve the chaos related to the coronavirus and racial issues that has enveloped the nation this year.
"The public does not trust [Trump] to handle the problems the country faces, and they are rejecting across the board his vision of America," Lockhart wrote. "Nixon won the culture war in 1972. Trump's vision of the U.S., rooted in 1970's America, is doomed to failure in my opinion."
He then pivoted by saying Trump can still win if Biden makes some missteps.
For example, Lockhart said Biden needs to make sure he courts core Democrats to not only support him, but to turn out on Election Day to vote. He also argued that concentrating on states that are historically red, such as Texas, is not an effective use of Biden's time.
Being "boring" is also OK, Lockhart wrote, adding that the former vice president should steer clear of falling into a hole of reacting to everything Trump says and does.
"The public is tired of Trump's act," Lockhart wrote. "They want competence to replace the reality show. Stick to your own game. Always be the adult in the race."
Another key piece of advice Lockhart doled out to Biden: Don't debate Trump.
"Biden will undoubtedly take heat from Republicans and the media for skipping the debates," he wrote. "But it's worth the risk as trying to debate someone incapable of telling the truth is an impossible contest to win."
