Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign has failed to reveal diversity numbers of its staff, BuzzFeed News reported on Wednesday.
In response to a question on the subject, Biden’s campaign declined to disclose the number of non-whites on payroll or detail how they track diversity data. Campaign officials also did not explain why they have not yet disclosed such data, especially as the nation focuses on the issue of racism, but indicated they expect to do so soon.
This is in stark contrast to the last presidential election, when Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton released data about her staff diversity on a quarterly basis after being encouraged to do so by Inclusv, an organization promoting racial diversity in national politics.
Inclusv founder Alida Garcia told BuzzFeed she is in an “ongoing dialogue” with the Biden campaign, but has so far had her requests for internal data go unanswered.
Garcia said she hopes to receive the data after the Biden campaign’s current hiring phase is completed, emphasizing that “Anything otherwise would be them walking it back” after how the Democrats shared data on the topic four years ago.
Even if the information is released, the top-line data only tells part of the story.
"Your diversity numbers in a one-dimensional sense can look great - but who really has agency? Who’s actually making decisions? Who has the financial investment and a real budget to run with?" said Linh Nguyen, a Democratic strategist who worked on Sen. Cory Booker’s presidential campaign.
A Biden official said the campaign has been tracking staff diversity internally since its launch last year “to ensure a robust diversity pipeline,” though the official declined to detail how the campaign prioritizes diversity.
