Rep. Joaquin Castro believes that President Donald Trump lied when he made claims that Trump Tower had been wiretapped, according to a Tuesday interview on CNN's "New Day."

"Yes," was the Texas Democrat's one-word response to host Chris Cuomo's question.

The investigation is just beginning, he said, noting that he did not believe FBI Director Jim Comey presented all the information he had during a Monday hearing about probing the Trump campaign's possible ties to Russia.

"I think it's just the beginning of answering that question, and I'm sure that it's going to be a months-long — hopefully not years long — but at least months-long investigation getting to the bottom of that," Castro said.

During the hearing, Castro addressed the discredited Russia dossier, which contained claims about Trump and other information. Castro said some of the information connects with a timeline of the release of emails belonging to John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's campaign manager.

"If you follow that timeline, there are some coincidences there that start to add up," he said.

It remains too early in the investigation to determine the effects that the probe will be to Trump's presidency, the congressman said.

"What everybody should hope for, aside from the partisanship, is to get to the truth. This shouldn't be a witch hunt against anybody. Nobody should be prejudged," he said.

During the hearing, Comey declined to answer almost all of Castro's questions about whether anyone associated with Trump had ties to the Kremlin, according to The Texas Tribune.
