Retiring Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., warned Israel's claims that the United State was behind a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israel is "the beginning of a war on the American government."
"We're seeing the air war right now, and we're seeing all these tweets and all this kind of innuendo and all these half-stories, and all this stuff is to create tremendous tension so that when the president comes in on the 20th, he can begin the ground war, which will be when his appointees begin to carry out his actions in the departments across the government," McDermott said in an interview on MSNBC.
Israel has been highly critical of the U.S., which did not use its veto power to block a Security Council vote, which condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The U.S. had abstained from voting.
"The American people are being subjected to a campaign of anxiety production and it really is very, very disturbing to watch," McDermott told the news network.
"The United States has had a very close relationship with Israel for a very long time. But they could never get 100 percent out of Barack Obama so they decided to attack him and use him as the reason why Donald Trump should come in and give them everything they want.
"They are running their own war against us and our policies. We said there should be anymore settlements and they've continue to push settlements."
CNN reports Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has order his nation's Foreign Ministry to temporarily limit working ties with the embassies of the 12 Security Council members who voted in favor of the resolutions.
"Israel's not going to be kicked in the teeth and not just respond to this," said Ron Dermer, Israel's ambassador to the U.S.
