Reps. Jim Jordan and Mark Meadows slammed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for his comments aimed at Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh concerning a controversial abortion case, saying his remarks were threatening and inappropriate.
"This is not the first time Chuck Schumer has tried to intimidate someone," Jordan, an Ohio Republican, said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "It didn't work with President [Donald] Trump. I don't think it's going to work with Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh, but it's still wrong. You don't do those kinds of things."
While speaking to protesters outside the Supreme Court, Wednesday, Schumer said Kavanaugh and Gorsuch "won't know what hit" them if they rule in favor of abortion restrictions. The court is weighing a Louisiana law that required doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital after a federal judge found that just one of Louisiana's three abortion clinics would remain open if the law is allowed to take effect.
"This is inappropriate," said Meadows, a North Carolina Republican. "This is typical Chuck Schumer. What he wants to do is actually rile up the base and make sure that what they do is put as much political pressure in the media, not only on the Supreme Court but on the president. But these kinds of tactics won't work because the American people won't stand for it."
Meadows also slammed a statement from Schumer's spokesman, who said the comments were targeting Senate Republicans.
"There are only two problems with that," Meadows said. "He was standing in front of the Supreme Court and he mentioned two Supreme Court justices."
He added that Schumer should apologize and say he misspoke, but "when you start making threats, whether they are veiled threats or not, it's just inappropriate."
