Jordan: DOJ Silent on Special Counsel for Clinton Probe

Jordan: DOJ Silent on Special Counsel for Clinton Probe

GOP lawmakers have been calling for a special counsel to investigate the ongoing concerns over 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, and the Obama White House since July, but the only answer from the Justice Department has been silence, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said Monday.

"Twenty Republicans sent a letter on July 27 calling for a special counsel," Jordan told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "We met with [Attorney General Jeff Sessions] on Sept. 28 and some of his staff. We brought up the same issue. The response from the Justice Department has been silence."

Jordan, along with Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., penned a Monday opinion piece for Fox News demanding Attorney General Jeff Sessions either take action or step down.

"The response from the Sessions Justice Department is no different than the response we got on a lot of questions from the [Eric] Holder and [Loretta] Lynch Justice Department," Jordan said. "That's our concern. When you have all these questions, let's appoint a special counsel."

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the special counsel in the Russia interference investigation, is "inherently compromised" because of his role in the Obama administration, Jordan said, so a special counsel needs to be appointed to get the answers about Clinton.

Among those questions are why Comey referred to the probe into Clinton's use of a private email server as a "matter," rather than an investigation.

"Think about what James Comey did," Jordan said. "[He] misled the American people, trying to call the Clinton investigation a matter and misled the American people when he let the public believe President [Donald] Trump was under investigation when he wasn't. He misled the American people twice."

Further, claimed Jordan, "we know the Justice Department tried to influence the election," including with Lynch's meeting with former President Bill Clinton on an airport tarmac in Phoenix.

"All of it cries out for a special counsel," Jordan said. "We ask Mr. Sessions to appoint a special counsel so the American people can get the answers."
