House Freedom Caucus Founder Rep. Jim Jordan Friday accused Senate Democrats of aiming for a shutdown because they feel it's more important to protect illegal immigrants than it is to fund the nation's military.

"It looks like they will have a shutdown because they think it's more important to give folks who came here illegally amnesty," the Ohio Republican told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"That's more important than funding the troops and doing what the election was about when it comes to immigration policy," Jordan added about the Democrats' stance on a continuing resolution on government funding. "I don't think that's what the 2016 election was about.

"That's their position, and you have to go ask [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer and the Democrats if they're going to shut down the government."

There is also now a commitment to start pursuing a bill from Sens. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, which is a stand-alone bill to fund the military for a whole year, said Jordan.

Jordan's contention about the Democratic vote met with argument from show co-host Willie Geist, who asked him if he believed children brought to the United States by their parents came illegally, and if he believed they should be punished.

"I never said that, but you have to go back and remember the context of the 2016 election," said Jordan, pointing out that President Donald Trump and Republicans were elected on a focus on immigration.

"So, let's get that done and deal with the DACA issue, which is a real issue, but it can't be the other way around," said Jordan. "It has to be that focus because that's what the American people elected us to do and I think it's a good idea to keep your promise, keep your word and do what the people say to do."

Democrats' comments on the House floor, he continued, were "all about the DACA individuals who are here."

When Jordan was asked, though, if he feels DACA recipients should be protected, he replied that there is a "prioritizing that has to take place and a focus that has to take place that is consistent with what the American people sent us here to accomplish."

Jordan said he also thinks the DACA issue should be dealt with in the contest of the larger immigration issue, "but not at the expense of doing what the people elected us to do. I don't know why that's so hard to get. It's so simple."

As for the other issues, "we want those prioritized because again that's what the American people elected us to do. There's no question about that. So why now are the Democrats so focused — we had an election, they elected us to do these things and now they're saying no, no, we can't do those."
