Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper's comments comparing the Russia probe and Watergate are "absolutely stunning," Rep. Jim Himes said Wednesday.
Clapper on Tuesday commented on the investigation into alleged ties between Russia and President Donald Trump's administration.
"Watergate pales, really, in my view compared to what we're confronting now," Clapper said during a speech to the National Press Club of Australia.
"Jim Clapper was an unshakable, impartial guy, and so to hear him go where he went in Australia was… absolutely stunning. I'd never seen anything like it before from Jim Clapper," Himes, D-Conn., told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
Himes also noted that in his role as national intelligence director, Clapper was always nonpartisan, calling him "a meticulously careful, completely unpolitical guy."
"When you question Jim Clapper, you never got anything that in any way was going to help your party or help you in whatever the fray of the day was," Himes said.
The Russia probe is taking attention away from infrastructure plans, and Himes said he would work with Republicans on that topic.
"Infrastructure is so important to my district that, if this week, we were really talking about infrastructure, my God, I would be there. I would be working side-by-side with my Republican colleagues to hammer out an infrastructure plan," Himes added.
