Jill Stein, a Green Party candidate in this year’s presidential election, is pushing the U.S. Justice Department for an investigation of the electoral system despite Donald Trump being voted in as president this past Monday by Electoral College voters.
"We write to urge the Department of Justice to launch an investigation into the integrity of our nation’s election system generally, and our nation’s voting machines specifically, based on the information we discovered in the course of this representation," Stein's counsel wrote Friday to Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
"The attempted recount process has uncovered that voting machines relied on in these states and across the country are prone to human and machine error, especially in under-resourced black and brown communities, and vulnerable to tampering and hacking. The recount also found that the states' efforts to protect their systems may be insufficient, particularly in low-income communities and communities of color. Each of these grave concerns warrants federal intervention," it added.
Stein led the effort for recounts in three states after computer scientists urged Hillary Clinton's campaign to challenge the election results because they believed they had evidence that some results had been manipulated or hacked.
Stein raised millions to have recounts in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan but those efforts were unsuccessful.
