Over a dozen Jewish organizations are calling on the White House to fire senior policy adviser Stephen Miller over his "extreme viewpoints and advocacy of racist policies."
In an open letter organized by the National Council of Jewish Women, the groups urge White House chief of staff John Kelly to dismiss Miller from his position in the administration. The letter is signed by 17 separate groups, including J Street, American Jewish World Service, and the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs.
Miller, who is Jewish himself, has held a central role in crafting President Donald Trump's immigration policy and his executive orders banning travel from seven Muslim-majority countries.
"As Jews, we are in solidarity with immigrants and refugees and believe that our nation must be a refuge and welcoming home for new Americans," the groups wrote. Miller "has been an obstacle to passing widely-supported, bipartisan, popular, badly-needed immigration policy changes throughout his time in the administration."
"He orchestrated cuts to the refugee program, resulting in the lowest admissions number in modern history during the worst refugee crisis since World War II," they add.
"Stephen Miller opposes the beliefs we hold dear, and while he advises President Trump there will be no forward movement on immigration — to the detriment of this great nation founded by immigrants. We urge you to remove Miller from your team and the White House as soon as possible" the letter concludes.
Miller said on Fox News in January that his plans for immigration include "more assimilation, higher wages, more economic opportunity and better prospects for immigrants and U.S.-born alike."
He also said that "if Democrats oppose a border, they are just saying they want continued, unending illegal immigration."
