A newly elected school board member in Millburn, N.J., may be the youngest elected official in the state,
according to The Star-Ledger.
Chase Harrison, 18, beat incumbent board member Rona Wenik, 50, winning 1,805 votes to her 1,653, according to incomplete results, Essex County Clerk Christopher Durkin said on Wednesday.
"He's been 18 for two months," Durkin said. "I cannot imagine anyone being younger."
Harrison ran his campaign on his own, mainly using Facebook and other social media, said his parents, David and Beth Harrison.
Because the minimum age to run for local office in Essex County is 18, Durkin said his office made an exception for the Millburn High School senior, who was 17 at the time he filed his nominating petitions by the June deadline.
The exception was made because Harrison would be 18 by Election Day.
"This is very unusual. I think it's positive that someone that young wants to be involved in the process," Durkin said.
