Jenna Ellis, senior legal adviser for President Donald Trump’s campaign, has accused the Arizona speaker of the House of taking advantage of Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s coronavirus positive.
Ellis said that the decision to shut down the state legislature is “absolutely unnecessary,” despite the fact that Giuliani may have exposed at least 15 lawmakers to the virus during an unofficial hearing at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix last week, where he spent about 11 hours in a ballroom. He also spent the following day at the state capitol, according to Arizona Capitol Times, where he met with several high-ranking legislators.
“Absolutely unnecessary,” Ellis tweeted on Sunday night. “Call Rusty Bowers in AZ and tell him not to use COVID as an EXCUSE!!”
Trump’s legal team remains committed to overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election in Arizona, which has already certified Joe Biden’s victory. Bowers, a Republican, said in a statement before Giuliani’s diagnosis that he was unconvinced of the Trump legal team’s argument for convening the state legislature to change the state’s elector law, saying they had offered "theories, but not proof” of widespread election fraud.
"Even if such evidence existed, the Arizona Legislature simply couldn’t do what is being asked. Under our state’s constitution, the Legislature can act only when it is in session, and the Legislature could call itself into a special session only with the support of a bipartisan supermajority of its members. That won’t materialize," he said last Friday.
