Attorney General Jeff Sessions – forced out at the White House on Wednesday – emailed his farewell to Department of Justice staffers less than a day later, telling them he was more proud of their work than he was of “a title or a job.”

According to the Washington Times, Sessions wrote employees that when he started out as a young assistant U.S. attorney, he never thought he would rise to become attorney general.

“But what I’m proud of is not a title or a job,” Mr. Sessions wrote, the news outlet reported. “What I’m proud of is this Department — the 115,000 people who work together to pursue our goals. What I’m proud of is you.”

In the email, Sessions pointed to DOJ initiatives like reducing violent crime, homicides and overdose deaths that were progressing, along with increased firearm and illegal immigration prosecutions.

“These accomplishments are your accomplishments — products of your work,” he wrote.

“Over my nearly 16 years in this Department, it has been an incredible honor to work with people who day after day and year after year consistently exceeded expectations,” he wrote. “That is just the standard we hold ourselves to here.”
